The Generosity of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a companion. Since my travel mate was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in multiple respects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
