Colombian President Says 'I Will Return to Arms Again' should US Invades.

The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone of their war of words, increasing strains between the two countries following American military units struck Venezuela with the aim of deposing the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has narcotics facilities and cocaine factories and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Rising Threats coupled with Accusations

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Trump suggested comparable military action against Bogotá, claiming the nation faces serious problems and “run by a problematic figure involved in producing the drug and selling it to America."

While Colombia is the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, there is no evidence that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the illicit industry.

A Frayed Alliance

Colombia was historically a close partner of the United States in the campaign combating drug cartels and received cross-party backing from American politicians, however, the relationship have soured dramatically since Trump was elected.

Its drug trade is predominantly run by guerrilla factions such as the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom demobilised after a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Strong Rebuttal

In response to a query if military intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump said: "I like the sound of that to me."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the 1990s, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am not an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.

"Trump speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he posted online.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will transform into a multitude of fighters across the countryside. And if they detain me, whom many of the population loves and respects, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed part of his youth belonging in the left-wing M-19 armed organization though it is believed that he never engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he took part in writing the nation's constitution in 1991 and eventually served as a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the capital city before winning the presidency.

"I swore to abstain from using arms again ... but for the homeland I will take up weapons once more," he affirmed.

Increased Security along with Widespread Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s personal security had been reinforced.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with the US president, but voices from across the political spectrum have condemned the threats of an invasion targeting Colombia.

Political and Economic Strains

American authorities cancelled the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged American soldiers to ignore orders that violate law. In October, it placed asset freezes targeting Petro, the first lady and a number of key allies.

Concurrently as the US increased its forces in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed operations against vessels off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
